The gift of forgiveness

What is Forgiveness?

By Barbara Shulman
  • Forgiveness is a choice, an attitude, and a life philosophy. It is a gift of freedom from the past.

  • Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself—it is not for the benefit of the offender.

  • Forgiveness is solely for your own healing; it serves no one else.

  • Forgiveness is both a choice and a learnable skill that is accessible to everyone.

  • “Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a permanent attitude.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

Forgiveness can be the golden shears that cut the ties from your past wounds and those that have hurt you. Scarlett Lewis, the mother of Jesse Lewis, one of the twenty beautiful 6-year-old children tragically murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School, penned these thoughts on forgiveness.

"Forgiveness felt like I was given a big pair of scissors to cut the tie and regain my personal power."

Are Any of These Thoughts Familiar?

  • I feel alone in my pain, hurt, and grief

  • I will never be “enough” for any partner in my life

  • Life would be so much better if only I had a better childhood

  • I am not good enough to deserve success, love, and abundance in my life.

  • Life is always going to be hard

  • I can’t let go of my anger, judgment, and frustration with myself and others

  • My anger is my strength in life; without it, I will be too weak.

  • This is my lot in life; I don’t deserve any better

  • Am I enough?

  • Why do I always feel so alone?

  • Will I ever be happy?
